Comments

Most Monington and Weston pianos in the UK were made between 1920 to 1940 when they made about 20,000 pianos. Many baby grands were made which have a reasonable tone for the size but nearly all have “simplex” actions. As Monington and Weston specialsed in baby grands, these were some of the best simplex action baby grands . They are mainly in walnut and mahogany. Uprights were generally small, with some 6 octave ones, many with oak cases and barley-twist column legs. The unique characteristic of many Monington and Weston pianos from about 1920 is their double iron frame – there is an extra iron frame at the back of the upright or under the grand piano; this was an attempt to make them more stable and definitely makes them heavier. Many uprights were well designed and can be of good quality. Pre 1910 Monington uprights can be very basic, some with cheap “coster” actions.
