We regularly tune and restore them; they are rich and powerful in tone, with a smooth responsive touch. German Steinways are quite different to American Steinways, the hammers being toned in a very different way. As a gereralisation, German Steinways are more mellow, and American ones more strident.
Used Steinway concert grand pianos available in the UK. Most of the Steinway concert grands on the second-hand market are modern ones (from about 1960 onwards) . They are commonly very worn and require at least new hammers. Ideally it's best to change the whole of the action, and as they are commonly restored, parts are readily available to do this. The modern Steinway will not usually need re-stringing, though may benefit from it. Older Steinways model D grands are quite rare. These often have a very rich tone, but usually need fully rebuilding. |
