Grand Piano Action. Here is a model of a grand action showing the parts. Once the key is depressed, the capstan lifts the undercarridge. This causes the repetition lever or "Whippen" to lift the roller and hammer to strike the string. If the note is played loudly the hammer shank flexes considerably during this process. The repetition lever allows the player great touch control as it holds the hammer close to the string ready for fast repetition.

STANDARD "ROLLER" or "REPETITION LEVER" GRAND PIANO ACTION
This is the standard or "English" grand piano action. It has remained almost unchanged in design since about 1880, though there were also several other styles of action around the same time. Modern piano actions are all of this style.
